April 2, 2016 MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - University of Denver gymnast Nina McGee (Cincinnati, Ohio) qualified to her second consecutive NCAA National Championships after finishing second in the all-around with a 39.350 at Saturday's NCAA Regionals in Minneapolis.
McGee also claimed the floor title with a meet-high 9.950, continuing her streak of winning at least one individual title in every meet this season.
This will be the 17th straight season that at least one DU gymnast advanced to the NCAA National Championships--doing so every year since 2000.
As a team, the Pioneers fought back from an early deficit and kept themselves in the hunt for a team berth through the final routine. The team finished fourth with a 195.700, behind Florida (196.725), Minnesota (196.175) and Missouri (195.850). DU finished ahead of Ohio State (194.775) and BYU (194.075).
DU began the meet on beam, led by a 9.825 from senior Emily Barrett (Norman, Okla.). Junior Julia Ross (Henderson, Nev.) had the team's second highest score, a 9.750, while two Pioneers tallied 9.700: McGee and freshman Kaitlyn Schou (Orlando, Fla.).
Following their first bye of the meet, the Pioneers moved to floor and rebounded with a 49.250 team tally. All of Denver's counted scores were 9.800 or higher, led by McGee's 9.950. Schou added a 9.800, and seniors Barrett and Maggie Laughlin (Scottsdale, Ariz.) each posted 9.825. Sophomore Claire Hammen (Loveland, Colo.) had DU's final counted score, a 9.850. In addition to McGee's first-place finish, Hammen also earned a podium spot, tying for third.
Denver fought to within .075 of Minnesota after vault where the Pioneers posted a 49.175--just .025 off the team's season high. Once again, all of DU's counted scored were 9.800 or higher, starting with two 9.800s from Barrett and Ross. Freshman Diana Chesnok (Charlotte, N.C.) and McGee each scored a 9.850, and Laughlin had DU's highest score with a 9.875--tying for fourth overall.
The Pioneers finished the meet on bars after a bye, highlighted by a team-high 9.850 from McGee. Ross had the team's second highest score, a 9.800. Chesnok was just behind with a 9.775, while fellow freshman Claire Kern (Charlotte, N.C.) scored 9.700 in the lead-off spot. McGee's 9.850 tied her for third on the event.
McGee will compete in the semifinals at the NCAA National Championships on Friday, April 15, in Fort Worth, Texas, for the second straight year. She will seek to improve on her tie for second on floor and 11th-place finish in the all-around at the 2015 NCAA Nationals.
