April 30, 2016

Results

Omaha, Neb. - The 48th-ranked University of Denver men's tennis team defeated Oral Roberts University 4-0 today in the Men's Summit League final match at the Koch Family Tennis Center in Omaha, Neb. to capture the team's third consecutive Summit League title.

Along with the women's tennis team, Denver became the first school in Summit League history to win three consecutive men's and women's tennis championships concurrently (both the men's and women's teams won each of the last two tournament titles).

"It feels great to win the conference championship," head coach Ricardo Rubio said after the match. "These guys worked hard throughout the year in really tight matches, which I think helped us in this situation to manage some of the matches in the Summit League championship. Winning the conference is not easy and for the team to do it now, three years in a row, is a great accomplishment. I'm very happy for them and we're looking forward to finding out who we will play in the upcoming NCAA tournament."

The Pioneers went 2-1 in doubles action today and 3-0 in their singles matches. DU improved their overall record to 18-7 on the season.

Denver received singles victories from Summit League Player of the Year Diogo Rocha (Lisbon, Portugal), Yannik James (St. Georges, Grenada) and Alex Gasson (Alton, United Kingdom) to help claim the championship win for the Pioneers. The singles matches for Henry Craig (Murrieta, Calif.), David Fox (Chipstead, Surrey, United Kingdom) and Wyatt Lovera (Miami, Fla.) all went unfinished. Rocha claimed the clinching point in his singles match to secure the win for the Pioneers.

In doubles play, James and Jesse Ruder-Hook (Denver, Colo.) beat Barnabas Koncz and Amar Saletovic (ORU) 7-5, while Rocha and Zach Fryer (Centennial, Colo.) defeated Michael Sosnowski and Braxton Bates (ORU) 6-3 in their doubles match.

As the winner of this weekend's tournament, DU earned the Summit League's automatic bid to the NCAA National Championship. The NCAA Selection Show is scheduled for Tuesday, May 3, at 5:00 p.m., and will be streamed live online at NCAA.com. The NCAA Regionals are slated for May 13-15 at campus sites throughout the country. The final rounds of the NCAA Championships, along with the individual events, are set for May 19-30 with the University of Tulsa hosting at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
