DENVER - The University of Denver women's soccer team created six second half chances, but couldn't find the equalizer as the Pioneers fell to Montana 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
"We played okay today, but not as well as we did on Friday and the result showed it," head coach Jeff Hookersaid. "I thought we had a little more intensity on Friday. On their goal, we let them switch the ball too easily and let them create a 2v1 which just led to mistake after mistake on that play, and they made us pay for it. The second halves of games we've played this season we've been good, we haven't given up a goal. We had some great chances at the end there, ones that we usually put away. I thought that if we could get one, who knows, maybe we can go get another. We got enough opportunities, we just have to finish those chances."
Just shy of the half hour mark, Montana's Ellie Otteson scored her first of the young 2016 campaign off assists from Mckenzie WaRren and Mary Gintz. The Griz' build-up started down the right as Gintz chipped Denver's back four meeting the run of WaRren who slid a cross just outside the six-yard box to the run of Otteson.
Denver outshot Montana 11-10 in the match, putting just four of its 11 shots on target. The Pioneers also held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks, including a 5-1 advantage in the second half.
Freshman Brittany Wilson(Littleton, Colo.) made six saves in her 58 minutes of work before being relieved in the middle of the second half by senior Cassidy Rey(Arcadia, Calif.).
Sophomore Mary DeWalt(West Bend, Wisc.) had a header off a free kick in the 63rd minute and freshman Cheyenne Shorts(Denver, Colo.) got a free header off a Lilly McSwain(Glenwood Springs, Colo.) corner in the 85th, but both Denver chances fell right into the arms of Montana's Kailey Norman.
Fresh off her 17th minute breakthrough on Friday night, sophomore Leah Swander(Grand Junciton, Colo.) had the final chance for the Pioneers with 19 seconds to play, but her shot rose over the crossbar, ending the match on Norman's ensuing goal kick.
