DENVER- The University of Denver women's volleyball team rebounded from its loss on Friday night with a convincing sweep of the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on Sunday afternoon.
The 25-15, 25-20, 25-10 straight set victory moved the Pioneers to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in the Summit League, while the defeat dropped South Dakota State to 2-15 and 0-4 in the league.
Kayla Principato led the visitors in kills with 10 in the match, while Cassidy Rooke and Lydia Bartalo provided 13 and 12 digs, respectively. Piyusha Boteju assisted on 19 Pioneer points, with Ellie Anderson in double-digits as well with 10 of her own. Emma Willis contributed five assisted blocks, and Bartalo, Cassie Baird, Rooke, Anderson all had two service aces in the match.
As a team, the Pioneers had 43 kills and hit .278 (43-13-108), while holding the Jackrabbits to 25 kills and a hitting percentage of .074 (25-17-108). The Crimson and Gold had 37 assists, 59 digs, 10 service aces and five total team blocks in the win.
Set One: After Denver scored the first point of the match on a Principato kill, the Jackrabbits went ahead 3-1 and would hold the early lead. However, after ties in the set at six, seven, eight and nine, the Pioneers used a 5-0 run to go ahead 13-9. The Jackrabbits would get as close as 13-11, and later added three more points to cut into the lead at 15-12, but Denver pulled away on an 8-0 run to make it 23-12. South Dakota State took the next three points to make it 23-15, but back-to-back kills by Boe put the set away at 25-15. The Pioneers hit .385 with 13 kills in the frame behind five kills from Principato, four from Tina Boe, and two from Becca Latham. Boteju had five assists and Rooke had five digs. Denver had four service aces to start the match, with Baird having two service aces, and Rooke and Anderson each having one.
Set Two: The Jackrabbits scored the first two points of the set, but Denver responded with a 7-0 run to jump out to a 7-2 lead. SDSU cut it to 7-5, but Denver was able to push the lead back out to four. The lead would eventually expand to seven at 17-10, and again at 20-13, before SDSU answered with a 6-2 run to cut the lead down to three at 22-19. Out of a Denver timeout, the Pioneers closed the set on a 3-1 run behind kills from Boe and Latham. Denver had 15 kills in the set, hitting .157 (15-7-51). Boe, Bartalo and Teal Schnurr each had three kills in the set. Rooke and Bartalo each had six digs, and Boteju had eight of the team's 13 assists in the frame. The Pioneers added four more service aces in the set, with one each from Macy Carrabine, Andrea Eddy, Rooke and Bartalo. Willis combined with Principato and Schnurr on assisted blocks, the first blocks of the match for the Pioneers.
Set Three: SDSU scored the first point of the set, but Denver used an 8-0 run off of three attack errors by the Jackrabbits, kills from Willis and Latham (three) and a Bartalo service ace to take control of the set. South Dakota State went on a 3-0 run to make it 12-7 Denver, but DU had a run of its own (7-0) to go from 15-8 to 21-8. Kills from Principato, Willis, Latham and Becca Mau put the set away at 25-10, and sealed the victory for the Pioneers. Denver hit a match-high .387 in the final set, with 15 more kills, while the Jackrabbits hit -.075 (5-8-40). Latham had five kills, Boteju had six assists, Bartalo had six digs, and Anderson and Bartalo each had a service ace in the set to lead the team in the respective categories. Willis had three assisted blocks in the closing set, with Principato, Latham and Bartalo each assisting.
