Feb. 11, 2017 DENVER - The No. 12-ranked University of Denver women's gymnastics team posted the sixth-highest team score in program history on Saturday night, edging out No. 8 Boise State 197.125-197.075. The Pioneers also tied the program record on bars with a team total of 49.400.
Freshman Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) scored career highs in the all-around, bars, beam and floor on her way to scoring the fourth-highest all-around total in program history with a 39.675. She also won a share of the all-around, vault, beam and floor titles.
"Our student-athletes showed tremendous mental toughness and grit tonight," head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart said. "We're coming off of a four-meet road trip and limited training this week, but they continued to rise to the occasion. They did a great job of being present and alert in the moment, and it reinforced their confidence and consistency.
"Overall, I'm so proud of the team's resiliency. We're still not at full strength, and we had some student-athletes battling illnesses. When you have only five student-athletes competing, everyone has to perform."
DU started the night on vault and posted a 49.250, the team's second-highest total on the event this year. Karr earned a share of the title with a 9.900, and senior Julia Ross (Henderson, Nev.) tied for third overall with a 9.875. Fellow senior Rachel Fielitz (Walden, N.Y.) rounded out DU's top-three with a 9.850. Sophomore Kaitlyn Schou (Orlando, Fla.) and junior Nikole Addison (Fort Myers, Fla.) added a 9.825 and a 9.800, respectively.
The Pioneers tied the school record for team bars score with a 49.400-which is the team's highest total on any event this season. Three Pioneers tied or set career highs, led by freshman Sam Ogden (Allen, Texas) with a 9.925 to tie for the event title. Karr tied for third with a personal-best 9.900 while Ross had DU's third-best score on bars with a 9.875. Senior Leah Lomonte (Katy, Texas) added a 9.850, which sophomore Claire Kern (Charlotte, N.C.) matched to tie her career high.
Denver added its second-highest beam score of the season with a 49.200, led by Karr's personal-best 9.925, which tied her for the event title. Schou tied for third overall after scoring a new career high with her 9.900. Addison added a 9.825 while Ross and Fielitz each posted 9.775s.
DU capped the meet with career highs on floor when Addison and Karr earned matching 9.950s to share first place overall with the team's final two routines of the meet. Freshman Courtney Loper (West Des Moines, Iowa) posted a 9.850, Ross added a 9.775, and Schou earned a 9.750. The team finished with a new season high on the event, a 49.275, while competing with only five student-athletes for the seventh straight meet.
In the all-around, Karr took the title with her 39.675-nearly two tenths higher than her previous personal best. Addison finished third after tying her career high with a 39.325. Ross, competing in the all-around for the seventh-consecutive meet, finished just off the podium with a 39.300.
"It feels really good to finally have a solid all-around competition," Karr said after the meet. "To put it all together is a lot of fun.
"I'm just excited, especially for the team. We had really good performances, but we obviously had things that we can go into the gym and fix for next weekend, and hopefully score even higher."
Denver will compete again at Hamilton Gymnasium next Saturday, February 18, against Minnesota. Single-meet tickets are just $9-and $6 for groups of 20 or more-and can be purchased online, at the Ritchie Center Box Office or by calling 303-871-2336.
