Feb. 13, 2017 NEW YORK - Denver, which just took over the No. 1 spot in both the USILA/Nike Coaches Poll and Inside Lacrosse Media polls, swept the first weekly awards for the 2017 season.
BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Connor Cannizzaro, Denver, Sr., Attack (Cazenovia, N.Y.)
Cannizzaro extended his active point streak to 42 games as he had four goals and two assists in No. 3 Denver's 14-6 victory at home over No. 19/17 Air Force. In first battle of two ranked teams this season, the senior netted his 26th hat trick and moved into fifth in goals in Denver's Division I record book. Cannizzaro scored the second, third, seventh and ninth goals for the Pioneers. He also assisted the 10th and 13th goals.
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Alex Ready, Denver, So., Goalie (Lancaster, Pa.)
Denver goalie Alex Ready turned away 10 shots while allowing just five in a 14-6 victory for No. 3 Denver over No. 19/17 Air Force on Saturday. Ready played 57:42 of the contest and allowed just one goal in the third quarter. Air Force had scored 11 goals in the Falcons' upset at then-No. 7 Duke a week prior. Ready currently leads the league in goals against average (5.20) and save percentage (.667).
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Ethan Walker, Denver, Fr., Attack (Peterborough, Ontario)
Pioneer rookie Ethan Walker scored a hat trick in his first career game and added two assist for five points in his Denver debut against No. 19/17 Air Force. Walker scored the opening goal in the contest as well as the sixth and 10th goals. His assists were on the second and seventh goals.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Tate Boyce, Providence, So., Goalie (Mathews, N.C.)
In a 1-1 week, Boyce posted a 5.80 goals against average with 21 saves and a .66 save percentage. In the win at Holy Cross, Boyce saved nine shots while allowing just four, a current league low.
Brendan Kearns, Providence, So., Attack (Wantagh, N.Y.)
Kearns averaged 5.5 points per game in a 1-1 opening two weeks for the Friars. He totaled seven goals and four assists with three goals and two assist in the double overtime loss to Boston University and four goals and two assist in the 10-4 win over Holy Cross.
Ryan Nawrocki, Providence, Fr., Midfield (Smithtown, N.Y.)
Scored three goals in a 1-1 week for the Friars. His two goals at Holy Cross were the second and fourth for Providence.
Nick Heller, St. John's, Sr., Midfield (Beverly Hills, Calif.)
Scored a pair of goals and added an assists to lead the Red Storm with three points in a 16-8 loss to No. 16/19 Rutgers.
Luke Palmadesso, Villanova, Jr., Midfield/FOGO (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.)
Won 17-for-25 (.680) faceoffs and picked up seven ground balls in Villanova's 12-10 loss to Monmouth.
