Feb. 18, 2017 DENVER ââ'¬" University of Denver freshman Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) earned a perfect 10.0 on vault to help the No. 11-ranked Pioneers to a 197.150 team total on Saturday-now the sixth-highest score in program history. Senior Julia Ross (Henderson, Nev.) set a new career high to take the all-around title. She also won the beam title, tied for first on bars and tied for third on floor.
DU topped Minnesota 197.150-196.075 in front of a sold-out crowd-the first sell out of the season. The team's last sell out was February 27, 2016.
"It was great to see the team back up last week's meet with another strong performance tonight," head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart said. "They showed tremendous energy and enthusiasm from beginning to end.
"We're so proud of Julia, who had a record-setting night. She was confident, consistent and showed tremendous composure."
Denver began the meet on vault with a 49.325, the second-highest team score of the season on the event. Karr scored a perfect 10.0-the first of her career-to win the event title. All five of DU's counted scores were at least 9.800s. Sophomore Kaitlyn Schou (Orlando, Fla.) and junior Nikole Addison (Fort Myers, Fla.) earned matching 9.850s to tie for second. Ross added a 9.825, and senior Rachel Fielitz (Walden, N.Y.) scored a 9.800.
The Pioneers moved to bars, posting a 49.150 overall. Ross won a share of the bars title with a 9.875-only .025 off her career high. She tied with teammate sophomore Diana Chesnok (Charlotte, N.C.), who set a new season high. Freshman Sam Ogden (Allen, Texas) had the team's next highest score with a 9.850. Sophomore Claire Kern (Charlotte, N.C.) and senior Leah Lomonte (Katy, Texas) had DU's final counted scores with identical 9.775s.
DU had its best showing of the season on beam, tallying a 49.400-the third-best score in program history on the event-led by Ross' career-tying and event-winning 9.925. Fielitz, too, tied her personal best with a 9.900 to tie for second overall with teammate Karr. Schou added a 9.850 while Ogden and Addison each earned 9.825s to give DU six scores above 9.800. Ogden's 9.825 was a new career high.
Denver finished the evening with five-up, five-count on floor and earned a 49.275, matching last weekend for the highest score of the season. Addison took home the title with 9.925 while Karr added a 9.875 to finish second overall. Ross tied her personal best with a 9.850, which tied her for third in the final event standings. Freshman Courtney Loper (West Des Moines, Iowa) earned a 9.825 while Schou posted a 9.800.
Ross won her second all-around title of the season-and third of her career-with a personal-best 39.475.
"I would say that tonight was euphoric," Ross said after the meet. "The energy was amazing, and the team chemistry was great.
"For me as a senior, I feel like I couldn't ask for anything more. Looking back to my freshman year to now, I am just thrilled and so grateful to be a part of DU Gymnastics."
Karr's 10.0 on vault gives Denver a total of six perfect scores on vault and 17 overall. DU's last perfect score on vault came from Moriah Martin on March 16, 2013. The last time a DU gymnast scored a perfect 10.0 was March 4, 2016, when Nina McGee did so on floor.
"It's just exciting," Karr said of her vault. "I stuck one in warm-ups and have been sticking them in the gym all week. It was exciting to stick a good one in competition. I just let it happen."
Kutcher-Rinehart added, "Maddie joins an elite group of athletes with Moriah, Heather (Huffaker) and Ashley to score a 10.0 on vault. She vaulted like that in practice, and it was good to see her perform that same way during the meet."
DU competes twice next week, beginning with a trip to Ohio State on Friday, February 24. The Pioneers return home on Sunday, February 26, against Illinois and Illinois State at 2 p.m. for the first of two meets in Magness Arena. Single-meet tickets are just $9-and $6 for groups of 20 or more-and can be purchased online, at the Ritchie Center Box Office or by calling 303-871-2336.
