DENVER - Scoring droughts for the University of Denver women's basketball team proved detrimental in a 67-45 loss against the Jaguars of IUPUI in Summit League play Wednesday night at Magness Arena.
The Pioneers fell victim to multiple field goal droughts in the game, including being held scoreless for the final 5:21 of the first quarter.
Denver would go the entire third period and first three minutes of the fourth without a field goal, but would go 10-of-10 from the charity stripe during that time.
The Crimson and Gold shot 34.9 percent on the game, going 15-of-43 from the floor while the Jaguars were 22-0f-52 for 42.3 percent.
Denver outrebounded IUPUI 33-29 on the game.
Senior guard Jacqlyn Poss was the only double-digit scorer for Denver, collecting 13 points on the evening.
Junior forward Jordyn Alt led the rebounding charge for DU, ripping down six boards, adding four points in the match.
The Pioneers would take an early 8-2 lead over the Jaguars when sophomore guard Samantha Romanowski would take it all the way to the rim with just over seven minutes to play in the first period.
Poss would hit from beyond the arc with six to play in the first period, giving Denver an 11-5 advantage.
IUPUI ended the first period on an 11-0 run, holding Denver scoreless for the final 5:21 of the period, taking a 14-13 lead going into the second quarter.
With four minutes to play in the half, senior forward Jesse Spittel and Alt would execute the backdoor play to perfection with Alt finishing, laying it in for two and giving the Pios a 23-20 lead.
IUPUI would score seven points in the final two minutes of the period, taking a 27-25 lead into the break.
In the fourth period the Jaguars came out and hit two quick 3s, taking a 53-35 lead with 8:34 to play in the game.
The field goal drought for the Pioneers would go until the 7:15 minute mark of the fourth period with Alt breaking it, hitting inside and bringing the score to 56-37.
IUPUI would go on to claim a 67-45 victory over the Pioneers.
Denver is back in action Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. when Western Illinois comes to Magness Arena.
