March 13, 2017 DENVER ââ'¬" University of Denver freshman Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) was named the Big 12 Conference Gymnast of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Karr tied the sixth-highest all-around score in program history (39.625) on Friday on her way to winning the title.
Karr scored a 9.950 on vault to win the title, continuing her seven-meet winning streak on the event. She now owns a total of 22 individual titles, the second-most by a DU freshman in program history and only one behind the leader (Ashley Shible with 23).
On bars, Karr tied her career high with a 9.900, helping Denver to set a new program record on the event (49.450).
Karr's all-around score matches the highest in the conference this week, and her 9.950 on vault was the highest on the event by a Big 12 gymnast this week.
In this week's national rankings, Karr is No. 6 on vault, No. 8 in the all-around and tied for No. 25 on floor. In the Big 12 Conference, she is No. 3 in the all-around and on vault, No. 5 on beam and No. 7 on floor.
This is the second time this season that Karr has earned Big 12 Gymnast of the Week honors, doing so the week of February 13. She also earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for the week of February 20.
DU has two more Big 12 weekly awards this season: Event Specialist from senior Leah Lomonte (Katy, Texas) for the week of March 6 and Newcomer from freshman Sam Ogden (Allen, Texas) for the week of January 23.
This is the final week that the Big 12 Conference will award weekly honors in 2017.
Denver will join Oklahoma, West Virginia and Iowa State at the 2017 Big 12 Championship on Saturday, March 18, at a neutral site in Frisco, Texas. This is Denver's second season as an affiliate member of the Big 12 Conference.
