NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. - The University of Denver women's golf team used a strong start to take command through one round of the Summit League Championship on Sunday. The Pioneers posted a team score of 296 (8-over-par) on their first run through of the 54-hole tournament.
Par for the course was 72 at Arbor Links Golf Course.
Head coach Lindsay Kuhle went with the lineup of Jessica Carty, Mariell Bruun, Lauren Whyte, Jessica Dreesbeimdieke and Sophie Newlove.
DU holds a one-stroke lead over South Dakota State.
The Jackrabbits' Megan Mingo is the leader in the clubhouse through day one after tying the tournament record - held by Carty and Newlove - with a 3-under on Sunday.
All five Denver members closed out the day in the top five on the individual leaderboard.
Carty led the way for the Pioneers, wrapping up her day in second after an opening-round 72. The defending individual medalist from last year's tournament started off hot, making four birdies on the front nine.
Newlove ended her first round in third after firing a 2-over 74. The England native recorded four birdies in her 18 holes of play.
The trio of Dreesbeimdieke, Bruun and Whyte all tied for fourth after shooting a 3-over 75 on the afternoon despite windy conditions.
Second-round action gets underway on Monday at 8 a.m. CT.
