May 1, 2017 NEWTON, Kan. - The University of Denver men's golf team hit the links for 36 holes Monday while battling extreme winds in the first two rounds of the Summit League men's golf championships.
The championships are being held at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kan.
Weather has been the story over the past few days as the practice round scheduled for Saturday was canceled and the first round of play originally scheduled for Sunday was postponed to Monday due to excessive rain and standing water on the course.
Par for the 6,733-yard course is 72.
As a team, the Pioneers finished the day in fifth place with a total stroke count of 601 (305-296) just behind fourth place South Dakota who fired a 597 (308-289) on the day.
Junior Chris Korte posted a very strong second round, moving from 30th place after the first round to fifth after two. Korte recorded a total score of 147 (78-69) on the day, tying with teammate senior captain Petter Mikalsen.
Mikalsen fired rounds of 73 and 74.
Oral Roberts currently sits atop the leaderboard at the championships with a team score of 586 (297-289).
Freshman Isaac Petersilie ranks third on the day for the Crimson and Gold, shooting 153 (76-77) and ending the day tied for 26th overall.
Junior Jake Kelley and freshman Eric Hagen tied for 35th after day one of competition, firing a 155 in rounds one and two. Kelley recorded a 78 and 77 while Hagen fired a 79 and 76.
The third and final round of the Summit League Championships will take place Tuesday morning with an 8 a.m. CT start off of hole No. 1.
