ALBUQUERQUE- The University of Denver women's golf team fell two spots on Tuesday, finishing 14th after round two of the NCAA Regional. The Pioneers shot a 12-over 300 on the day at the University of New Mexico Championship Course.
Par for the course was 72.
Head coach Lindsay Kuhle went with the lineup of Jessica Carty, Mariell Bruun, Lauren Whyte, Jessica Dreesbeimdieke and Sophie Newlove.
No. 1 Stanford had a big day, jumping up to take the team lead with a total of 3-under, four shots ahead of No. 36 Pepperdine.
"Better round today but we needed to take advantage of the wind and hole locations and didn't do that," Kuhle said. "We got off to a rough start unfortunately and didn't have many birdies today. Mariell and Jess [Carty] both shot 74, which was solid but we need more from our 3, 4 and 5 players.
"We hope we can finish strong tomorrow and make a run for a top-six spot. As soon as we start seeing some putts fall for birdies I think we will gain some momentum and confidence. We look forward to competing for each other and playing Pioneer golf, which is competing and playing confidently until the very end."
The senior duo of Carty and Bruun carried the DU attack on Tuesday, with each putting up a 74 on the scorecard. Bruun closed out the day in a tie for 38th (5-over). Carty, meanwhile, wrapped up her round in a tie for 45th with a 36-hole total of 150 (76-74).
Dreesbeimdieke shot a 6-over in her second round, bringing her total to 9-over through two rounds. The junior from Windhoek, Namibia, sits tied for 60th in the three-day event.
Newlove shook off a tough first round to bounce back with a 3-over in the second, putting the sophomore in a tie for 71st.
Whyte tied for 77th after shooting a 77 in her second round.
Final-round action is set for Wednesday.
