BOX SCORE
Oxford, Ohio -
The University of Denver Pioneers (12-6-4, 6-4-2-1) dominated the Miami University RedHawks (9-9-2, 4-5-1-0) with a 4-1 victory on Saturday at Steve Cady Arena.
"We left nothing to chance tonight,” Denver coach Jim Montgomery said. "There was no gray area in our purpose. We played with great pace. Our special teams weren’t denied, our net-front battles weren’t denied and we had a great game.”
"It’s the best three games in a row we’ve played all year and we’re only 2-1-0," Montgomery said. "We have to continue to build upon this, but if we keep building this way it's the first time I can honestly say that if we continue to do the right things I’m excited about where we can go.”
The Pioneers opened the scoring only 50 seconds into the game as Dylan Gambrell left a drop pass for Jarid Lukosevicius who fired a shot from the left faceoff circle over the shoulder of RedHawks goalie Ryan Larkin. Lukosevicius earned his second of the night at 13:42 of the period immediately following Denver's two-man advantage, receiving a goal-mouth pass from Henrik Borgström for a tap-in on the 5-on-4 power play. Denver took a 2-0 lead and 13-2 shot advantage into the first intermission.
Denver continued its pressure in the second period, outshooting Miami, 15-3, in the frame. Only 35 seconds into the third period, Gambrell struck again when he capitalized on a loose puck in front of the net to make it 3-0. Borgström and Terry had assists on the goal.
Miami pulled Larkin for the extra attacker with roughly 15 minutes remaining in regulation and benefited from the decision at 9:52 of the third period when Scott Dornbrock scored to pull the RedHawks within two (2) goals. After replacing Larkin following the goal, the RedHawks pulled him again with 4:26 remaining. Denver iced the game with 37 seconds remaining as Colin Staub found Borgström on a two-on-one rush and Borgström scored on the empty net.
The Pioneers 1/5 on the power play and 3/3 on the penalty kill.
