DENVER – A night after
Emilio Pettersen stood out, fellow teammate
Liam Finlay had a night of his own to remember as the 10th-ranked University of Denver hockey team took out Alabama-Huntsville 6-0 in Magness Arena on Saturday. The homecoming-weekend win kept the Pioneers perfect on the year at 2-0, their best start since 2014.
Finlay was the star of the night, recording a game-high four points (three goals, one assist) for DU, showcasing his high-scoring potential at the forward position.
Freshman forward
Brett Stapley notched one goal and two assists for the Crimson and Gold.
Defenseman
Slava Demin racked up two assists in the victory along with
Kohen Olischefski and
Ryan Barrow.
Sophomore goaltender
Devin Cooley picked up his first shutout in his collegiate career, stopping all 16 shots he faced.
Offensively, the Pioneers put on a show for the sellout crowd, outshooting the Chargers 49-16.
For a second night in a row, Denver got on the scoreboard fast, scoring in the first 25 seconds after
Les Lancaster drilled one into the back of the net, giving him his first goal as a Pioneer. Sophomores Barrow and Olischefski picked up assists on the play.
The quick-hitting score was the fastest for DU in nearly seven years.
Jarid Lukosevicius made it a two-score contest after recording his first goal of the year with 8:06 remaining in the opening period on a pass from Pettersen, who racked up his team-best third assist of the year on the play. Demin also was credited with an assist, his first in the 2018-19 campaign.
Again, the Crimson and Gold were dominant in the first 20 minutes of action, outshooting Alabama-Huntsville 21-4, over a 5-to-1 margin.
Finlay put Denver up 3-0 with just over five minutes left in the second after scoring on a one-timer off a beautiful feed from Demin, giving the freshman defenseman his second assist in the game.
The Pioneers again took advantage of a power-play chance, pushing their lead to four on some good puck movement that resulted in a Stapley goal with 3:13 to go before intermission. Finlay and Olischefski were credited with assists.
DU made it a rout at 5-0 after Finlay tallied his second goal early in the third on a nice pass from Stapley, bringing the junior to within one of getting the hat trick.
Finlay locked up the hat trick with 90 seconds remaining in regulation off an assist from Barrow, his second on the day, to make it 6-0.
The Crimson and Gold went on to record the first shutout of the year from there.
