Pioneers Victorious in Five-Set Showdown Against Omaha

OMAHA – The University of Denver women's volleyball team defeated Omaha in a five-set thriller on Tuesday  evening. The Pioneers won by scores of 22-25, 25-15, 25-10, 23-25, and 15-8 in the highly-anticipated matchup.

With the victory, DU improved to 19-1 (8-0 Summit League) on the season.

"I am very impressed with the way this team has battled over the past couple of weeks," said head coach Tom Hogan. "Whether it's injuries, viruses or intense midterms, the players have given everything they have to our practices and matches. We have a tough weekend ahead of us with two very good teams, and we will turn our focus forward as we return to Denver."

Sitting Atop the Summit League:
With the big win over Omaha, the Pioneers became the only team in the Summit League to remain undefeated in league play. Denver has now won 24 of its 29 sets played in conference competitions.

Becca Bombs:
Senior Becca Latham totaled 17 kills (a season high) in 33 attempts (.394%) against the Mavericks. 

Pioneer Performers:
Bartalo and Latham led the team with 17 kills, Anderson led the team with 29 assists, and Macy Carrabine notched 29 digs, a career high.

Set Two Domination:
After a set one loss, the Pioneers came out fighting in the second set, going on a quick seven-point run. Sophomore Lydia Bartalo led the team with seven kills in set two, tallying half of DU's 14 kills. The Pioneers led the entire set, ultimately winning 25-15 over the Mavericks.

Success From Behind the Line:
Denver entered the match ranked No. 1 in the NCAA in service aces per set (2.1) and fourth in total aces (147). The Crimson and Gold notched 11 aces against Omaha, with Ellie Anderson leading the team with three, tying her career high.

Let's Talk Numbers:
Denver totaled 59 kills, 54 assists, 69 digs, 11 aces and a .244 hitting percentage against Omaha. The Crimson and Gold held the Mavericks to a .084 hitting percentage (44 kills in 155 attempts), their lowest this season.

What's Next for DU:
The Pioneers return home to host North Dakota State on Friday at 7 p.m. in Hamilton Gymnasium.
