Game Preview: Denver vs. Alaska-Fairbanks

The Denver Pioneers men's hockey team is set to return to the ice to for the second leg of its two-game series against the Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks. After defeating the Nanooks, 4-1, on Friday in Magness Arena, the Pioneers look to mount a 4-0-0 record to start the season for the first time since 2012-13.

• Liam Finlay and Emilio Pettersen lead the Pioneers with six points each
• Devin Cooley is 3-0-0 in his first three career starts, posting a .969 SV% and 0.67 GAA
• Denver is 3-0-0 to start the season for the first time since 2014-15. The last time the Pioneers started 4-0-0 was 2012-13
• 15 Pioneers have at least one point this season and 11 have multiple points

• The Pioneers scored three goals in 2:16 late in the 1st period to erase a 1-0 deficit and take a two-goal lead before the first intermission
• Liam Finlay, Emilio Pettersen and Cole Guttman each recorded two points
• Devin Cooley made 25 saves on 26 shots
• Denver went 1/7 on the power play and 4/5 on the penalty kill

• Denver has a bye week before hosting Western Michigan for the first time since sweeping the Broncos on Oct. 28-29, 2016 in Magness Arena
• The Pioneers are 14-7-1 all-time against Western Michigan and finished 0-2-0 against the Broncos last season

• The Nanooks are on a five-game losing streak, getting outscored 21-5 during that stretch
• Alaska-Fairbanks failed to score in its opening weekend at Arizona State, getting outscored 8-0 and outshot 66-36
• The Nanooks are in a stretch of playing three Top-10 opponents in three weeks (St. Cloud State, Denver, Minnesota State)

• Colton Leiter scored the lone goal for the Nanooks at 8:21 of the 1st period
• Anton Martinsson made 39 saves on 42 shots
• The Nanooks went 1/5 on the power play and 6/7 on the penalty kill
 
ALASKA-FAIRBANKS: UP NEXT
Alaska-Fairbanks at Minnesota State – Oct. 26-27, 2018
• The Nanooks will play Minnesota State for the first time since falling to the Mavericks in the first round of the WCHA playoffs last season. Alaska-Fairbanks went 1-3-0 against Minnesota State last season
• Alaska-Fairbanks plays 8 of its first 10 games on the road

• Emilio Pettersen was named NCHC Rookie of the Week after recording one goal, three assists, seven shots and a +2 rating in his first two collegiate games
• Devin Cooley was named NCHC Goalie of the Week after recording 38 saves on 39 shots and a 16-save shutout in his first two collegiate starts

• Denver's freshmen class has combined for 14 points (4-10-14), 1st in the NCAA
• Emilio Pettersen is averaging 2.00 points per game, 1st among NCAA freshmen
• Eight freshmen have played through the first three games and four have registered at least two points
 
ROOTED IN ALASKA
• Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle is from Anchorage, Alaska
• Assistant Coach Tavis MacMillan played at Alaska-Fairbanks from 1990-1994, recording 192 points in 135 games. He served as assistant coach of the Nanooks from 1996-2003 (7 seasons) and head coach from 2004-2007 (3 seasons)
• Assistant Coach Dallas Ferguson played at Alaska-Fairbanks from 1992-1996, recording 104 points in 138 games. He served as assistant coach of the Nanooks 2004-2008 (4 seasons) and head coach from 2008-2017 (9 seasons)
• Joe Howe was hired as assistant coach of Alaska-Fairbanks on Aug. 29, 2018 after serving two seasons as the Pioneers' volunteer assistant coach and one season as the director of hockey operations
 
YOUNG PIONEERS
• At 28, David Carle is the youngest coach in Division I college hockey
• The Pioneers have the fourth-youngest team in college hockey with an average age of 20 years/8 months
• At 24, Colin Staub is Denver's oldest player and more than six years older than Brendan Budy (18), the Pioneers' youngest player
• The Pioneers have 20 freshmen and sophomores, the most since the 2007-08 season when Tyler Bozak was a freshman
 
NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING
• Brendan Budy and Sean Comrie were each named to the NHL Central Scouting preliminary players to watch list for the 2019 NHL Draft, receiving C ratings as potential fourth, fifth or sixth round selections
 
EXPERIENCED STAFF
• Assistant Coach Tavis MacMillan served as head coach of Alaska-Fairbanks from 2004-07
• Assistant Coach Dallas Ferguson served as head coach of Alaska-Fairbanks from 2008-17
• Volunteer Assistant Coach Steven Reinprecht played 663 NHL games over 11 NHL seasons, winning a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 2001
• Team Manager Ben Scrivens played 144 NHL games over five NHL seasons in addition to representing Canada at the 2018 Winter Olympics
