BROOKINGS, S.D. – The University of Denver women's soccer team dropped its first Summit League match of the 2018 campaign, falling in the second period of extra time to South Dakota State on Sunday afternoon at Fishback Soccer Park.
"Overall, I'm happy with how we played, keeping another top team in the league scoreless on the road for 90 minutes after the way we won on Thursday," head coach
Jeff Hooker said. "We had a couple of good chances to win in overtime, but we switched off with 30 seconds left and allowed them to create a chance late. It's a really disappointing way to end the road trip, and now instead of continuing to stay on top of the league, we are chasing now."
South Dakota State's goal came with 22 seconds left on the clock in the second overtime on Sunday as Leah Manuleleua finished off her fourth goal of the season off an assist from Karlee Manding.
On a chilly afternoon at the site of the 2018 Summit League Women's Soccer Championship, the two teams went into the locker room scoreless with Denver holding a 3-2 edge in shots. Denver and South Dakota State booked tickets to extra time after a scoreless second half. The Pioneers played beyond regulation for the second time in as many matches this weekend, and for the fifth time this season on Sunday afternoon.
South Dakota State outshot Denver 3-2 in the extra periods, including the final shot that ended the Pioneers fourth Summit League contest of the campaign.
UP NEXT: Denver will cap off a three-match road swing on Thursday as the Pioneers head to Purdue Fort Wayne. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. MT. The Crimson and Gold will return home Sunday to take on Summit League newcomers North Dakota with kickoff at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium set for 12 p.m. MT.
