DENVER – The University of Denver golf junior
Mary Weinstein was named the Colorado Women's Golf Association Player of the year for a second straight time on Monday.
The Highlands Ranch native once again had a terrific summer, which resulted in a 72.4 scoring average in the fall, lowest in the Summit League.
"I am so proud of Mary to earn this award again this year," head coach
Lindsay Kuhle said. "Qualifying for the USGA women's amateur and finishing second at the CGA Match Play Championship was outstanding. Mary continues to impress us with her fantastic play and the improvement that she makes every year."
The junior had some impressive rounds this past fall, scoring a program-record 64 (8-under) in the final round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Sept. 26. Weinstein also fired a 4-under 68 in the opening round of the same tournament.
During the summer, Weinstein made her mark around the state, racking up a runner-up finish at the CGA Match Play Championship and qualifying for the USGA Women's Amateur.
"It is such an honor to be recognized as the CGA Women's Player of the Year for a second straight year," Weinstein said. "I am so blessed to be a Pioneer and play golf for the DU women's golf team at the highest collegiate level possible. My coaches and my team constantly push me to be the best student-athlete I can be and this also carries over into my summer season."
The former first-team All-Summit League selection has recorded one top-five finish this year, taking third at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
"She is one of the best players in not only the state but in the nation," Kuhle said. "Shooting a 64 at Red Sky Golf Club on the Fazio course this fall shows how strong her game is and how mentally tough and competitive she is.
"This is very well deserved and I happy to see her be rewarded for her great play and to see her continuously improve each year."
The Pioneers return to action in the spring starting with a dual with Arizona State on Jan. 28.
