Pioneers erase 10-point deficit on final day of double dual meet

IOWA CITY– The University of Denver women's swimming and diving team turned a 10-point deficit entering the day into a 10-point victory in a dual with Iowa on Saturday morning at the University of Iowa Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. DU's women fell to No. 3 Michigan, and the Pioneer men dropped duals to both No. 6 Michigan and Iowa this weekend.

Denver's women's medley relay once again opened the meet with a strong start, taking second in the 400 with a time of 3:44.63, swam by redshirt-senior Heidi Bradley (Victoria, B.C.), freshman Brandi Vu (Longmont, Colo.), junior Kylie Cronin (Marblehead, Mass.) and senior Lauren Moden (Parker, Colo.).

Bradley turned in another runner-up performance in a backstroke event on Saturday, following up her 55.44 in the 100 yesterday with a 2:01.51 in the 200 today to also reach the wall in second. Sophomore Emily Vandenberg (Ajax, Ontario) and freshman Livi Schmid (Fairfax Station, Va.) earned points in the dual with Iowa, taking seventh and eighth overall and third and fourth in the dual with times of 2:06.23 and 2:07.55, respectively.

Sophomore Charlotte Simon (Saint Remy, France) and Vu finished 1-2 in the dual with Iowa and fourth and fifth overall in the 200 breast, clocking in at times of 2:20.75 and 2:21.43.

Following his victory in the 50 free yesterday, sophomore Cameron Auchinachie (Binghamton, N.Y.) was narrowly beaten to the wall in Saturday's 100 free, finishing second in a time of 44.52.

Following a break, sophomore Uma Knaven (Chapel Hill, N.C.) took third overall and first in the dual with Iowa in the 400 IM with a time of 4:27.79, while Simon and Vandenberg both finished ahead of Iowa's second-best swimmer in the event with times of 4:31.63 (fifth overall) and 4:33.46 (seventh overall), respectively.

Denver's women's 200 free relay quartet of Bradley, Moden, junior Josie Valette (Boulder, Colo.) and sophomore Aysia Leckie (Georgetown, Ontario) finished the women's portion of the meet on a high, taking second behind Michigan with a time of 1:34.15, out-touching Iowa by 0.33 seconds.

DU's men's relay also took second with a time of 1:21.08. Auchinachie, sophomore Jackson Gainer (San Jose, Calif.), junior Hugo Sykes (Weston, Conn.) and sophomore Adriel Sanes (Rosharon, Texas) swam the final race of the weekend for the Pioneers.
