Denver Heads to Western Illinois for Second League Game

DENVER – The University of Denver women's basketball team will wrap up the first weekend of Summit League play at Western Illinois on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. MT.

The Pioneers snapped a four-game losing streak on Friday evening with an emphatic 95-68 victory over the Omaha Mavericks. Denver had five players reach double figures for the second time this season while hitting 14 3-pointers in the contest.

Head coach Jim Turgeon will try and lead DU to its first 2-0 start in league play since joining the Summit back in 2013 but will have to break an eight-game slide against the Leathernecks. Lauren Loven averages 15.8 points per game and is first in the nation in 3s made, second in 3s per game and seventh in 3-point percentage. Loven leads a Pioneer team that averages 83.4 points per game, which ranks 13th in the nation.

Western Illinois is just 4-10 in head coach JD Gravina's eighth season at the helm. The Leathernecks excel offensively, averaging 74.5 points per game while making nearly 10 3s per game but defensively WIU ranks outside the top 300 in points allowed and field goal percentage defense.

Gravina relies on two studs in Olivia Kaufmann and Taylor Higginbotham who both average double-figures to lead the team. The Leathernecks lost their league opener on Friday evening to South Dakota State 93-84 in a back-and-forth contest that saw Western Illinois take a lead after three quarters.
