Shinyashiki Named to Google Cloud Academic All-America First Team

Senior Andre Shinyashiki named athletic department’s 19th first team Academic All-America selection

AUSTIN, Texas – University of Denver men's soccer co-captain Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) has been named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America First Team, selected by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced on Thursday. Shinyashiki becomes Denver's 54th all-time Academic All-America selection, and the Pioneers 19th first team pick.

Shinyashiki's selection made him the fourth men's soccer player voted to the first team and the sixth Academic All-America selection overall.

Academically, the marketing major entered his senior year with a 3.63 grade point average. The Senior CLASS Award Finalist has helped lead the Pioneers to the top grade point average in the country in back-to-back-to-back seasons. The two-time Hornbeck Scholar and Dean's List recipient is also a three-time member of the Summit League Honor Roll and an honoree of the Summit League Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence.

On the field, Shinyashiki enters the NCAA Quarterfinal weekend first in the country in points per game (2.86), first in total points (60), first in goals per game (1.33), first in total goals (28), 14th in shot accuracy (60.6%), first in game-winning goals (11), second in shots per game (4.71) and first in shots on goal per game (2.86). Shinyashiki's goals per game tally is the highest since Andrew Mittendorf (Lehigh) netted 24 in 18 matches (1.33) in 1998. The Denver senior's points per game mark is the most since Conor Casey (Portland) had 23 goals and seven assists in 18 matches in 1999 (2.94).

Earlier this season, Shinyashiki became Denver's record holder in single-season points (60), goals (28) and game-winning goals (11), while setting Denver's career records in points (117), goals (51) and game-winning goals (18). The Sao Paulo, Brazil, native's goal total in 2018 eclipsed Denver's previous career record goal tally of 27.

Entering the NCAA Tournament, Top Drawer Soccer's Midseason No. 1 player had scored eight more goals than the next closest player in the national rankings. Shinyashiki netted the first five hat tricks of his career in 2018, including a four-goal game in Denver's 4-3 victory over Omaha to begin the Summit League slate.

Shinyashiki led a Denver senior class that entered the NCAA Tournament third in the country in wins (61-11-10) and second in the country in percentage of points earned at 78.5%.
