DENVER – The University of Denver women's basketball team travels to Cedar City, Utah, this weekend to take on the Southern Utah Thunderbirds on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. MT.
The Pioneers are off to a 6-2 start, the best start in DU Division I history and sit inside the top 50 in the country in multiple statistical categories. Coach
Jim Turgeon utilizes a run-and-gun offense that produces just under 90 points per game and features the best three-point shooting in the land.
Lauren Loven averages 19.6 points per game to lead the team but is joined by three other teammates who also average double-figure scoring.
Courtney Smith, a junior transfer from Thornton, Colo., returned from injury on Tuesday night at Wyoming and had a big impact producing 15 points and six rebounds in the matchup against Wyoming.
Southern Utah is off to a 3-4 start to the season and is coming off of a 60-59 victory over Utah Valley. First year head coach Tracy Sanders has led her team to wins over BYU and San Diego early in the season and relies on a balanced attack that features three double-figure scorers. The Thunderbirds excel on the defensive side of the ball, holding opponents to just 63.6 points per game. Offensively Southern Utah controls the tempo and uses the shot clock while averaging just 58.3 points per game.
The teams have not met since the 1997 season when Southern Utah defeated Denver 81-68 in Cedar City.

TOGETHER 4 COLORADO TOY DRIVE:
The Pioneers have partnered with CBS4 for the Together 4 Colorado Toy Drive to support the Denver community during the holiday season. Beginning Nov. 17, there will be toy drops at every Denver Athletics and Newman Center event thru Dec. 19. Additionally, there will be a Community Shop 'n Drop on Saturday, Dec. 15 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., hosted by the Denver Cheerleading squad at the circle drive on the north side of the Ritchie Center.
