BOX SCORE
The University of Denver Pioneers improved to 3-0 (1-0 Summit League) with a 5-2 win against the Air Force Academy Falcons on Saturday at Life Time Fitness.
"The doubles point is usually really important and the guys did a great job," Denver coach Ricardo Rubio said. "(Winning that point) set the tone for the rest of the match."
The Pioneers earned the doubles point and four singles victories en route to their third-consecutive win in their first home match of the season. Each singles match was decided in two sets, with Denver winning at No. 3-6
Matt Summers and Jorge Nunez had highlight performances for the Pioneers. Summers won his match at No. 3 singles (6-3, 7-5) as well as his match at No. 1 doubles with partner Jesse Ruder-Hook, 6-1. Nunez won his match at No. 4 singles (7-6 (7-3), 6-3) as well as his match at No. 2 doubles with partner Mattia Ros, 6-3.
"I don't know of another team in the country playing freshmen at 1-4 (singles)," Rubio said. "It's a total team effort from the No. 1 guy to the last guy on the team. They're competing hard in practice and doing a good job."
Denver is set to return to action on Sunday, Feb. 11.
