DENVER -
BOX SCORE
The University of Denver Pioneers (3-1, 1-0) fell, 5-2, to the University of Utah Utes (8-1, 0-0) on Sunday at Life Time Fitness.
"Utah is a really good team," Denver coach Ricardo Rubio said. "The doubles were really tight. We learned a lot this weekend and will get ready to play Iowa and Drake."
Utah gained an early edge, winning two tightly contested doubles matches, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 2 and 7-6 (7-5) at No. 3. The tiebreaker wins left the No. 1 doubles match unfinished as Jesse Ruder-Hook & Matt Summers were tied, 6-6, with No. 56 Russell Benkaim & Randy Cory.
Matt Summers and Pedro Fernandez Del Valle logged the Pioneers' victories on the singles courts. Summers defeated Slava Shinyan, 6-1, 7-5. Fernandez Del Valle outlasted Joe Woolley, 6-7, 7-6 (7-5), 10-8.
The Pioneers are set to return to action on Feb. 16 at Iowa and Feb. 17 at Drake.
