Denver in Eighth at Arizona Wildcat Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 40 University of Denver women's golf team closed the first two rounds of the Arizona Wildcat Invitational in eighth place at 13-over par after rounds of 294 and 295 (589).

Held at the Sewailo Golf Club, par for the 6,494-yard course was 72.

Sophomore Mary Weinstein finished the day tied for fifth with a team-high three-under after rounds of 71 and 70. Behind the Highlands Ranch, Colo., native was junior Sophie Newlove, who ended the day at even par and tied for 15th .

Denver senior Sonya Knebel (+4) sits tied for 36th after shooting rounds of 74, while senior Lauren Whyte is seven-over and tied for 54th.

Sophomore Camille Enright (+10) and senior Jessica Dreesbeimdieke (+11) wrapped up their rounds with scores of 154 and 155, respectively.

No. 1 UCLA leads the field with a team score of 14-under, 10 strokes ahead of host and No. 21 Arizona and 12 strokes ahead of No. 7 Texas. Long Beach State is fourth at three-over and No. 41 UNLV rounds out the top five at six-over on the day.

After the first round, Denver was tied with No. 20 Purdue for ninth with a six-over score of 294 and trailed Missouri by five strokes. Newlove led the Crimson and Gold with a two-under round of 70, followed by Weinstein, who also finished the round under par at one-under (71). Newlove had three birdies in the first round, while Weinstein had five.

The Pioneers moved up in the second round of play, with Weinstein leading the team with a two-under after recording three more birdies. Weinstein was the only player for DU to finish the second round under par, with Knebel and Newlove as the next closest Pioneers (+2).

Denver returns to the course for a final round tomorrow at 8 a.m. MT., trailing No. 20 Purdue by one stroke and three strokes in front of Missouri.
