SPARKS, Md. - University of Denver men's lacrosse senior long stick midfielder Sean Mayle (San Carlos, Calif.) was selected with the sixth overall pick by the Chesapeake Bayhawks at the 2018 MLL Collegiate Draft Wednesday night from the U.S. Lacrosse Headquarters. Mayle is the 22nd Pioneer taken all-time in the MLL Collegiate Draft, and the sixth first round pick in Pioneer history.
A short stick midfielder in his high school career, Mayle was converted to a long stick midfielder in college, and has not only become a lock down defender, but has provided an offensive spark in transition for the Pioneers throughout his career. A faceoff wing man for a good portion of his career, Mayle has picked up 120 ground balls and forced 21 turnovers in his career, including six in the first eight games of his senior year.
On the offensive side in his career, Mayle has 14 points on nine goals and five assists, including a career-high five goals in eight games in 2018. Mayle was a 2018 Media Midseason Honorable Mention All-America selection and was selected to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List. The two-time BIG EAST First Team selection earned BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week honors twice in 2018.
"First and foremost, Sean Mayle is one of my all-time favorite people," head coach Bill Tierney said. "He brings light and energy to our team, our practices and our locker room. Sean is one of the best athletes I have ever coached, but much more than his multiple skills, his greatest attribute is his unselfishness. On the first day we mentioned to him that we would like him to try playing longstick defensive midfield, his statement was, `I'll do whatever you think is best for the team.' Every day since, he has lived that promise. His ability to play great defense, be a great ground ball guy and create transition offense is truly unique."
