NEWTON, Kan. - The University of Denver men's golf team held off North Dakota State for as long as it could before falling in the final two holes on Tuesday, finishing second at the Summit League Championship. The Pioneers posted a 1-under 287 as a team during the windy final 18 holes of play.
Par for the 6,733-yard course was 72.
Head coach Erik Billinger went with the lineup up Jake Kelley, Eric Hagen, John Sand, Chris Korte and Jackson Solem.
DU saved some of its best golf for last during the harsh round, making big putts throughout the day until a rough 18th hole by the team gave the Bison their chance to capture the league team title, which they did, finishing with a two-stroke lead.
Fort Wayne's Zach Schroeder captured individual medalist at 2-under for the three-day event.
The Crimson and Gold finished runner-up, their best showing since winning the event back in 2014.
Denver was led by the incredible play of Kelley and Korte, who nearly locked up the title for the Pioneers. Kelley was on another level on Tuesday, going low with a 4-under 68 despite tough wind conditions for a third straight day. The senior's final-round 68 was the low round of the tournament, and earned him a spot on the all-tournament team. Kelley finished up his final collegiate tournament tied for fourth.
Korte shook off a tough second-round performance and got back to work, posting a 2-under 70 in his final round of his career. The former Regis standout wrapped up his last tournament tied for seventh with fellow teammate Solem.
Solem, who showed glimpses of what could be coming down the road for Pioneer golf, closed out his day with a 2-over 74.
Sand tied for 15th after a 5-over 77 in his final 18 holes of the year.
Hagen had it going for most of the day before a bad final hole put him at 3-over for the day and in a tie for 19th.
DU will return to action on the course in the fall.
