Sean Mayle to Miss Remainder of 2018 Season

May 1, 2018

2018 Schedule | Pioneer Movement

DENVER - University of Denver men's lacrosse senior long stick midfielder Sean Mayle (San Carlos, Calif.) will miss the remainder of the 2018 season, head coach Bill Tierney announced on Tuesday. The Denver senior, who has missed the last five games, has been ruled ineligible.

"Because of the University of Denver's unique academic quarter system, we have to monitor our academic success twice during the regular season," Tierney said. "Due to a technicality with a course that Sean repeated and passed, the school and NCAA have deemed him ineligible. Not having No. 6 on the field is a huge loss for our program, especially in light of our potential playoff run, but all appeals have been exhausted. It's time to move forward and for our defense to continue to play at a high level, as they have the last five games. Sean is one of the absolute finest young men, players and leaders that I have ever had in my career, and we will continue to support him toward graduation and enthusiastically cheer him on in his professional career."

Mayle was selected No. 6 overall in the 2018 MLL Collegiate Draft, becoming the 22nd Pioneer taken in the draft, and the sixth first round pick in the program's history. The California native and Denver captain will remain with the program through the remainder of the 2018 season, and plans to join Chesapeake following the NCAA campaign.

A short stick midfielder in his high school career, Mayle was converted to a long stick midfielder in college, and not only become a lock down defender, but provided an offensive spark in transition for the Pioneers throughout his career. A faceoff wing man for a good portion of his time at DU, Mayle picked up 120 ground balls and forced 21 turnovers, including six in the first eight games of his senior year.

On the offensive side, Mayle had 14 career points on nine goals and five assists, including a career-high five goals in eight games in 2018. Mayle was a 2018 Media Midseason Honorable Mention All-America selection and was selected to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List. The two-time BIG EAST First Team selection earned BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week honors twice in 2018.
