DENVER – The University of Denver women's gymnastics team maintained its No. 7 spot in the Road to Nationals rankings, released on Monday.
DU improved its average score to 196.267 with a season-best 196.350 to finish second at the Metroplex Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, on Saturday.
The Pioneers are ranked inside the top 25 on all four events including top-10 positions on three events. The bars squad sits at No. 5 this week with a 49.342 average. Denver is also in the top 10 on floor (No. 9 with a 49.108 average) and vault (tied for No. 10 with a 49.067 average). The team returned to the beam rankings as well, moving up to No. 23 (48.750).
Junior
Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) improved to No. 2 in the nation on bars, increasing her season average to 9.933. It is the highest that a DU gymnast has been ranked on the event since Nina McGee was tied for No. 1 during Week 1 of the 2013 season. Karr is also back in the vault rankings at No. 20 (9.858).
Sophomore
Lynnzee Brown (Kansas City, Mo.) holds the No. 11 national ranking in the all-around for the second week in a row with an average score of 39.392. She also moved up to a tie for No. 11 on vault (9.875).
Freshman
Alexis Vasquez (Arcadia, Calif.) entered the national rankings for the first time in her career, tying for No. 17 on beam (9.875).
The Road to Nationals rankings are released every Monday throughout the season and are determined by average score for the first half of the season. Beginning in mid-February, rankings will be calculated by Regional Qualifying Score (RQS).
The University of Denver gymnastics team, presented by Your Hometown Toyota Stores, competes on the road again this weekend for an all-Big 12 Conference meeting at West Virginia with Iowa State.
DU will return to Denver on Sunday, February 10, against No. 1 Oklahoma. Single meet tickets are available beginning at $9. Tickets can be
purchased online or by calling the Ritchie Center Box Office at 303-871-4625.
