DU Finishes Day One of Arizona Intercollegiate

McCoy shoots 2-under in first 36 holes
TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Denver golf team wrapped up day one of the Arizona Intercollegiate on Monday. The Pioneers shot a team score of 8-over in 36 holes of action.
Par for the 7,292-yard course was 71 at the Sewailo Golf Club.
Head coach Erik Billinger went with the lineup of Esteban Missura, Cal McCoy, Jackson Solem, Eric Hagen and John Sand.
No. 11 Arizona State has the team lead through two rounds at 21-under, five strokes ahead of rival Arizona.
Texas A&M standout Chandler Phillips leads all players with a 12-under scorecard, highlighted by second-round 63 on Monday.
McCoy was a standout for the Pioneers on the afternoon, posting back-to-back rounds of par-or-better to finish tied for 21st at 2-under.
"For the morning round, we just got off to a really rough start," Billinger said. "We were 11-over in the first six holes. I was proud of the guys for battling back and shooting 3-under after that start to finish the day at 8-over.
"Cal played great, shooting a 69 and 71. In the afternoon, Esteban had it going and John broke par. Overall, we just didn't come out sharp to start and that really hurt us. I'm learning about each guy and their tendencies, especially with the new things that some of them are working on. Most of the guys look better and we just need to keep focusing on getting better and better as the spring season plays out.
"Tomorrow we are looking to come out focused and climb up this leaderboard," Billinger said.
Missura and Sand each finished up the day tied in 45th at 144 (2-over)
Solem closed out his afternoon in a tie for 67th at 4-over.
Hagen ended the day at 7-over.
Round three is set for Tuesday.
