Denver Takes Down NDSU 3-1, Secures Third Summit League Win

Box Score DENVER, COLO- Following a six day break, the University of Denver volleyball team traveled north to take down North Dakota State in four sets (25-20, 25-20, 25-16, 25-19) on Sunday afternoon.

The Pioneers move to 11-6 overall and 3-2 in Summit League play while the Bison fall to 7-11 on the year and 2-4 in conference action.

Denver showed up with a purpose in the opening set, grabbing an early 8-5 lead following a 3-0 run. The Bison pulled themselves within one at 10-9 but the Pios denied the threat, going on a 6-0 tear with the help of three consecutive kills by Kalea Fobert and Amanda Green. NDSU battled back once again to stay alive, going on a 6-0 run to get within one at 17-16. An offensive battle down the stretch came to an end when the Pios stepped up late, snatching three of the final five points to run away with a first set victory 25-20.

NDSU made their mark early in set two jumping out to a 3-1 lead but the Crimson and Gold battled back in order to deadlock things at five. Exchanging points to follow the tie score, the Bison found themselves with a three point lead at 10-7. North Dakota State kept their foot on the pedal, stretching their lead to as much as four at 16-12. With work to do, the Pioneers responded quickly following a 3-0 run by the Bison and cut the deficit to one at 19-20 late in the set with the help of back-to-back kills from juniors Tina Boe and Lydia Bartalo. Using the momentum to their advantage, Denver took the final five points of the set to complete the comeback at 25-20.

With their backs against the wall, the Bison offense came out swinging in set three, jumping out to early 8-2 advantage on the Pioneers with the help of a 7-0 run. DU found themselves in a hole at 12-4 but a pair of 3-0 runs midway through weren't enough to cool the Bison. DU was unable to recover as the Bison sailed to the third set victory, 25-16.

After a back and forth battle to open the fourth frame, the Pios busted it open going on a 6-0 run to take a 14-6 lead. North Dakota State showed some light midway through going on a 5-0 run of their own and cutting the deficit to four at 17-13. Fending off every Bison attempt at a comeback was the Pio offense, who sealed the deal down the stretch grabbing the final three points to take the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.

As a team, Denver out-hit NDSU .241-.203, led by senior A. Green who recorded a team-high 13 kills on the day while Ellie Anderson led the way in assists with 23. Macy Carrabine notched a team-high 12 digs while Boe led the team in blocks for the second consecutive match, denying five through four sets.

Denver will continue on the road as they head to Nebraska for a Tuesday night matchup against Omaha (6 P.M. MT).
