GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of Denver volleyball team took three sets from North Dakota on Tuesday afternoon (25-22, 25-18, 25-22) to notch their fourth consecutive Summit League victory.
The win improves the Pios to 14-6 overall and 6-2 in Summit League action while the Hawks fall to 10-12 on the year and 2-6 in Summit League play.
DU out-hit the Hawks .248-.101 en route to 44 kills through three sets while holding UND to just 29 kills on the day.
Back and forth play early on was eventually broken by the Pioneers when they took a 10-6 lead following a service ace from
Lydia Bartalo. A 3-0 stretch led by a pair of kills from
Amanda Green to lock in a 15-9 advantage was the difference maker midway through. The Hawks battled their way back within one of the Pios after a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 19-18 but a Denver block combined with another kill from Green down the stretch, locked in the first set victory, 25-22.
The Crimson and Gold came out strong, opening the second set on a 4-0 tear. The Hawks responded with a 3-0 run of their own to deadlock the frame at five. The Pios came back with four consecutive points to go up 12-7, three of those coming with Green at the service line. Exchanging points late in the set, the Pioneers were able to maintain their lead, securing the set 25-18.
Starting the third set much like the second, Denver jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. In attempt to fend off the sweep, the Hawks saw their first lead of the set come midway through following three consecutive points to go on top at 14-13. The Pios were able to rergain their lead but the Hawks answered pulling themselves within two at 21-13 forcing a Denver timeout. Coming out of the huddle, DU buckled down, taking two of the final three points to snatch the third set victory 25-22 and add yet another sweep to the win column.
Bartalo led the Pioneers offensively posting her fifth double-double of the season, tallying 10 kills to go along with a team high 16 digs while A.Green and
Tina Boe each added nine kills for the Crimson and Gold.
Ellie Anderson notched 25 assists, serving up points to seven different Pioneers while Summit League blocks leader,
Brianna Green led DU in blocks with three through the three set match.
Denver will return home to take on Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday in Hamilton Gymnasium (7 PM MT).
