DENVER, COLO- The University of Denver volleyball team completed their weekend homestand with a sweep of Oral Roberts (25-12, 25-20, 25-13) on Sunday.
The win improves Denver to 16-6 overall and 8-2 in Summit League action while the Golden Eagles fall to 6-18 on the year and 2-8 in Summit League action.
The Pios came out swinging, slamming six kills early on to give themselves a 12-6 lead to open the match. A pair of kills from
Amanda Green led the Pioneers to an 8-0 run late in the set to put them on top 23-9. The Golden Eagles stole two of the final three points of the set but a kill from
Kalea Fobert silenced the ORU comeback efforts and sealed the Pio victory 25-12.
Exchanging points to open the second frame, the Pioneers found their groove following a 4-0 run to grab a 7-4 lead. Oral Roberts found a 3-0 run of their own midway through to tie things at 12. Three consecutive kills from
Lydia Bartalo late in the set gave Denver a 22-18 and it was Bartalo again sealing the deal down the stretch with back to back kills to end the frame and give the Crimson and Gold a 25-20 victory.
The Denver offense blanked the Golden Eagles in the opening points of the third set, opening the frame on a 10-0 run with Bartalo at the service line. Using the help of a pair of runs midway through the Pioneers didn't look back cruising to a 25-13 victory.
DU recorded 12 aces from the service line through three sets, six of those coming from Bartalo. Notching her sixth double-double of the year, Bartalo led the Pioneers in kills with 14 and an attack percentage of .571.
Ellie Anderson recorded a team high 14 assists to go along with ten digs. As a team, the Pios out-hit the Golden Eagles .348-.035.
Denver will head back on the road next weekend with a match against South Dakota State (6 PM MT).
