DENVER – Despite being down a man, the University of Denver men's golf team delivered a solid second-day performance on Saturday at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate. The Pioneers fired a team score 285 (1-over) on the afternoon.
Par for the 7,285-yard course was 71.
DU has now posted a team score of 7-under through two rounds of action at the University of Denver Golf Club at Highlands Ranch.
The Pioneers had two teams in the field.
The first team included
Connor Jones,
Jun Ho Won,
Esteban Missura, and
Cal McCoy. Head coach
Erik Billinger went with
Brady Arnett,
Roy Kang,
Jackson Solem,
Carson Griggs, and
Eric Hagen on the second team.
John Sand was a late scratch due to flu, giving the first team only four active players on the round.
Fellow Summit League member North Dakota State sits in second, two strokes behind.
"Incredibly proud of how hard our guys played today," Billinger said. "We were a man down and the guys stepped up knowing every shot counted. We put ourselves in contention to compete for the title tomorrow.
"I was proud of how Cal played. He really competed and got going on the back nine. He put himself into contention come Sunday."
McCoy put himself in the hunt on Saturday with a 1-under effort, bringing his two-round total to 4-under. The former Regis standout got going on the back nine, firing a 2-under 33.
Solem continued his solid play for a second straight round, building on his career-best performance from Friday with 1-under (70) on Saturday. The Longmont native wrapped up the day tied for fourth.
Ho Won made a move up two spots on the leaderboard on Saturday, finishing tied for sixth. The junior posted a 1-under (70) on day two which was highlighted by four birdies over a five-hole stretch midway through the round. He currently is at 3-under for the tournament.
Missura and Jones sit tied for 13th with a two-round score of even par.
Final-round action is set for Sunday with an 8:30 am MT start.
