DENVER – The University of Denver women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the Summit League Women's Basketball Preseason poll, the league announced Monday. Seniors
Madison Nelson and
Lauren Loven were tabbed Preseason All-Summit League First Team.
South Dakota and South Dakota State were picked to finish first and second.
Denver finished the 2018-19 season 18-14 overall and 10-6 in league play. The Pioneers capped the season off with an appearance in the second round of the WNIT.
Nelson, Second-Team All-Summit League last season, led the team shooting 47.7 percent from the field, scoring 16.5 points per game, and averaging 8.9 rebounds per game, 55 steals, and 34 blocks in 2018-19. The senior forward led the Summit League with 286 rebounds last year, the fifth highest in program history and 20th best in league history.
Loven, named Honorable Mention All-Summit League last year, led the Crimson and Gold with a 111 made threes while averaging 14.3 points per game in 28.3 minutes per game. The Scottsdale, Arizona native set a new program and Summit League record with 111 made and 250 attempted three-pointers last season. The senior finished top-20 in the nation in three statistical categories – three-point field goal percentage (44.4; 8th), three-point field goals per game (3.47; 6th), and three-point field goals made (111; 7th).
The Pioneers open the 2019-20 season in Kansas City, Missouri on Nov. 5 at 4 p.m. (MT) against UMKC.
