Weinstein Leads Strong Start for Pioneers at Battle at the Beach

DENVER – The University of Denver women's golf team battled back in the first round of the Battle at the Beach in San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico at the par-71, 6,250 yard San Jose Club Campestre. Denver posted a first round team score of 302 (14-over), sitting tied for seventh.

"Today was challenging with the wind and rain to start, however we got off to a good start and felt very confident," head coach Lindsay Kuhle. "We are nine strokes back and are in position. I feel that we'll come out solid, confident and ready to go tomorrow."

LSU leads the 16-team field with a score of 293 (5-over); followed by Texas A&M (296; 8-over) and Vanderbilt (298; 10-over) to round out the top-three.

Two Pioneers – Mary Weinstein and Anna Krekling – were two of 12 golfers in the 88-player field to shoot par or better on the day. A four-birdie first round put Weinstein tied for fourth with a one-under par performance. Krekling fired three birdies to finish even par on the front nine and the even par on the round. The freshman is tied for ninth heading into the second round tomorrow.

"I was very proud of our senior leader Mary Weinstein today who shot one-under and putted really well with a solid short game," added Kuhle. "Freshman Anna Krekling was also extremely solid today shooting even par and finishing three-under the last four holes. She is a competitor and a fighter and she fought to the very end."

Freshman Anna Zanusso tied for 62nd with an 18-hole score of 79 (7-over), while Erika Danielsson shot an 80 (8-over) and is tied for 67th. Alison Armstrong is tied for 85th.

Competing as an individual, Alyson Bean finished one-under par on the front nine, ultimately finishing the day with a two-over par round. The Murrieta, California native is tied for 18th after one round.

"Alyson (Bean) in the individual spot was solid with a 74. She started very well and also putted well," said Kuhle.

The second round tees off at 9:30 a.m. (MT) Saturday.
