DENVER – The University of Denver volleyball team took care of business in a sweep of North Dakota (25-17, 27-25, 25-15) on Friday night.
The win marks the Pioneers 10
th sweep of their 2019 campaign, improving them to 18-7 overall and 10-3 in Summit League play. The Fighting Hawks fall to 11-16 overall and 3-10 in Summit League action.
The Pioneers jumped on top early, opening the set with four-straight points. North Dakota did their best to battle back, posting a 3-0 run to pull themselves with one at 6-5. A 7-1 run by the Pios midway through consisting of four-straight serves from
Ellie Anderson, led the Pios to a 15-8 advantage. Despite a late comeback effort by UND, Denver managed to grab four of the final five points to lock in the set one victory at 25-17.
The Crimson and Gold mirrored their first set start, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the second frame. Freshman setter,
Lorrin Poulter set up three consecutive slams for
Lydia Bartalo and
Kalea Fobert to put the Pioneers on top at 12-6. The UND offense came alive, cutting the Denver lead to 17-14 and continued to chip away, eventually taking the lead at 22-21 following a 5-0 run.
Tina Boe and
Amanda Green ended the UND threat, scoring the final two points for DU and ending things at 27-25.
In pursuit for their tenth Summit League victory of the season, the Pioneers buckled down in the third frame. Using a 5-0 run midway through to take a 13-8 advantage, Denver continued to build on their lead down the stretch. A service ace from
Ellie Anderson, and a pair of blocks from Bartalo and Boe were enough to propel the Pios to the third set victory, 25-15, locking in their tenth sweep of the season.
As a team, the Pioneer offense posted a .264 attack percentage. Bartalo led the Pio offense once again, recording a team high 10 kills while locking in a .476 hitting percentage. Anderson paired up with Poulter to put up a combined 34 assists through three sets. Anderson led the way, recording 22 of the 34 assists to go along with 11 digs, marking her tenth double-double of the year. Denver notched six blocks, led by Bartalo and Boe.
DU will get one day of rest as they return to action on Sunday in Hamilton Gymnasium to take on North Dakota State (1 PM MT).
