Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Third Period Pushes No. 8 Pioneers Past Tigers, 3-0

DENVER The No. 8 Denver Pioneers hockey team (10-4-3, 2-3-2-1) scored three goals in the third period and Devin Cooley made 24 saves to blank the Colorado College Tigers (6-6-1, 2-4-1-0) 3-0 on Friday at Magness Arena.

"I thought overall it was a real good team effort," Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle said. "We didn't give up much most of the night and the power play finds a way to execute in the third for us."

Devin Cooley was flawless in his first shutout of the season and fifth of his career, keeping the Pioneers in a 0-0 game through two periods. His biggest stop came as he slid across the crease to deny Bryan Yoon on a one-timer with 4:24 to play in the second.

"Level of urgency to start the game, we've talked about that a lot, and it was there from the get go," Carle said. "Second period they pushed for sure, but we weathered the storm."
Denver outshot the Tigers 31-24, marking the sixth straight game the Pioneers have outshot their opponent and 15th time this season.

Emilio Pettersen put the Pioneers on the board early in the third period. On the power play for the third time in the night, Bobby Brink pushed the puck to Pettersen who fired a shot from the bottom of the left circle over the left shoulder of Matt Vernon.

Denver doubled its lead skating four-on-four four minutes later with Slava Demin and Pettersen helping the Pioneers gain the zone and feed Cole Guttman. Coming off a two-goal performance in the 2-2 tie with Arizona State on Dec. 7, Guttman swept left before cutting across the crease and lifting a shot over Vernon to make it 2-0.

"I thought Emilio was on his toes and going all night and wanted to make a difference," Carle said. "Guttman, this is two weekends in a row that he looks like the Cole Guttman from last year so it's really good to see. We need those guys going for us."

Bobby Brink nearly extended Denver's lead with 4:20 left, sending a redirect off the right post. Brett Edwards iced the game in the final minute with an empty-netter.

Cole Guttman has three goals in his last two games…The Pioneers posted their fourth shutout of the season…Denver went 1/3 on the power play and 3/3 on the penalty kill…
