Box Score Colorado Springs, Colo. – The No. 8 Denver Pioneers hockey team (11-4-3, 3-3-2-1) didn't slow after a three-goal third period lifted it to victory on Friday. Looking for its first sweep since Nov. 1-2, Denver accomplished its goal with a 3-1 win against the Colorado College Tigers (6-7-1, 2-5-1-0) on Saturday at the Broadmoor World Arena.
Bobby Brink,
Kyle Mayhew and
Cole Guttman scored for the Pioneers as they moved to 3-1-1 in their last five games ahead of a 19-day holiday break.
Magnus Chrona made 20 saves in the win.
Denver outshot Colorado College 37-21 with the help of a second-period onslaught where the Crimson & Gold fired 18 shots to the Tigers' six. The game marked the seventh straight the Pioneers have outshot their opponent and sixth in which they've done so by double digits.
"It was really complete," Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach
David Carle said. "The second period we did a better of starting to get pucks to the net with people there and were able to pour a little bit on offensively."
The second-period offense brought goals at 10:07 and 16:23 of the period for Denver. The Pioneers' forecheck led to their first goal of the night with Brink,
Jaakko Heikkinen and
Hank Crone pressuring the Tigers' defense and forcing a turnover. Crone intercepted a pass up the boards and found Brink, who fired a quick backhander past Matt Vernon.
Six minutes later, Mayhew took the puck behind the net, left a pass for
Emilio Pettersen and cut to the net where the Pettersen found him for a backdoor tap-in. Denver's 2-0 lead held for 2:03 before Colorado College's Alex Berardinelli responded with a rebound off the rush to cut the deficit.
Guttman extended Denver's lead and secured the win on the power play at 2:11 of the third period, crashing the net on a shot through traffic and managing to poke the puck past a sprawled Vernon. It marked the third consecutive game the Pioneers have scored on the power play and moved Denver's power play to 6/20 in the last five games.
The Pioneers penalty kill was also perfect for the third straight game, defending all three Tiger chances in the first period, including back-to-back power plays in the first 10:00.
…
Cole Guttman has four goals in his last three games… Denver went 1/3 on the power play and 3/3 on the penalty kill…
