DENVER – University of Denver Vice Chancellor for Athletics and Ritchie Center Operations
Josh Berlo has been named to the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Oversight Committee. His stint on the committee will begin this fall and run through August 2030.
Berlo takes the National Collegiate Hockey Conference's seat on the committee that ensures that appropriate oversight is maintained in men's ice hockey, while enhancing the development and future of the sport.
"
Josh Berlo is an outstanding leader whose extensive experience across college hockey and intercollegiate athletics makes him an exceptional representative for the NCHC on the NCAA Men's Division I Ice Hockey Oversight Committee," said NCHC Commissioner
Heather Weems. "Having served at institutions with rich hockey traditions and contributed to four national championships at the University of Denver and University of Minnesota Duluth in the last 10 years, Josh brings a deep understanding of both the opportunities and challenges facing our sport. He is a trusted and respected voice who will represent the National with distinction as college hockey continues to evolve. I am confident Josh will help shape policies that strengthen the student-athlete experience and advance the continued growth of our game as the premier developmental pathway to professional hockey."
Berlo recently served two years on the NCAA Men's and Women's Soccer Rules Committee, which ran through June 30 of this year. Prior to his arrival in Denver, Berlo served on the NCAA Division I Women's Ice Hockey Championship Committee. Berlo took over Denver Athletics in July 2022, bringing with him more than 20 years of collegiate athletic administrative experience, including nine years as the athletic director at Minnesota Duluth.
"Josh will bring steady and experienced leadership to the Men's Ice Hockey Oversight Committee, and he's already proven his commitment to growing the college game," said DU Richard and Kitzia Goodman Hockey Head Coach
David Carle. "His background and championship standards give him first-hand insight into what our student-athletes, fans, support staff and the sport need to keep advancing for the better. Josh understands the pressures in front of us and will bring a voice that people trust. I have no doubt that he'll help guide decisions that strengthen our sport and ensure college hockey remains the best development path for players."
Denver has continued its storied success in the Directors' Cup among I-AAA schools during Berlo's tenure, claiming its NCAA-record 10th NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 2024 and adding to it with the program's 11th in Las Vegas in April. In his 13 seasons as an athletic director, Berlo's men's ice hockey programs have won four national championships.
Last fall, Berlo spearheaded the University of Denver's move to the West Coast Conference for nine of its varsity athletic programs beginning in 2026-27, a multiple-decade-long vision of the late Chancellor Daniel L. Ritchie. Denver remains in the NCHC for men's ice hockey.
