DENVER – The No. 7-ranked University of Denver women's gymnastics team hosted its annual Crimson & Gold Intrasquad on Saturday in Hamilton Gymnasium, providing fans their final look at the 2020 Pioneers before the start of the season.
The DU gymnasts performed routines in front of judges to simulate competition and gain experience before Denver's season opener on January 4.
"The team performed well tonight, and we are on track for the first meet of the season," head coach
Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart said. "Tonight was about giving the freshmen experience. We had a lot of routines from them, and they stepped into the lineups and delivered."
Saturday's event included an all-around performance from junior
Lynnzee Brown (Kansas City, Mo.). The reigning NCAA National co-Champion on floor debuted her new choreography to the delight of fans.
Sophomore
Alexandria Ruiz (Lake Mary, Fla.) also competed in the all-around on Saturday, providing consistent and solid routines across all four events. Junior
Mia Sundstrom (Boulder, Colo.) performed on vault, bars and beam while resting on floor for the night.
Junior
Emily Glynn (Longmont, Colo.) delivered a stellar bars set while also competing on vault and floor. Sophomore
Alexis Vasquez (Arcadia, Calif.) competed her signature beam routine and also appeared on floor, an event she looks to add this season.
Freshmen
Emma Brown (Adel, Iowa),
Callie Schlottman (Savage, Minn.) and
AK Subject (Wayzata, Minn.) each competed for the first time as Denver gymnasts, providing DU with depth and solid routines across all four events. Fellow freshmen
Victoria Fitts (Fort Collins, Colo.) and
Amoree Lockhart (Fort Worth, Texas) graduated from high school early and have recently begun training with the Pioneers.
Senior
Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) did not compete after having a minor knee procedure done. She is expected to make a full recovery.
The DU fans that attended provided energy to Hamilton Gymnasium. Speaking about the crowd, Kutcher-Rinehart added, "This was one of our best showings ever at the Crimson and Gold Intrasquad, and we're thankful for the continued support and enthusiasm from all of our fans. We cannot wait to see them in Magness Arena for the home opener on January 12."
