No. 4 Denver Ties No. 20 Arizona State, 2-2

Glendale, Ariz. – Cole Guttman scored his second goal of the night with 41 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime in the No. 4 Denver Pioneers (9-4-3, 1-3-2-1) 2-2 tie with the No. 20 Arizona State Sun Devils (8-4-2) on Saturday at Gila River Arena.

Guttman's goals were the lone tallies for the Pioneers despite an offensive onslaught. Denver outshot Arizona State 46-22, including 14-6 in the third period and 6-0 in overtime, but was unable to solve Evan DeBrouwer who made 44 saves for the Sun Devils.

"I didn't think there were any passengers and we played with a high level of urgency," Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle said. "Their goalie played great, he made all the saves he should and a lot that he shouldn't have. If we generate like that most nights, we're going to end up with more than the other team."

Denver's flubbed first-period scoring chances loomed throughout the game. Griffin Mendel and Ian Mitchell each hit the post in a one-minute span and Brett Stapley's backhander for the apparent go-ahead goal was denied by Debrouwer. The inability to finish those plays became problematic in the second period when Arizona State took the lead.

PJ Marrocco and James Sanchez found the net for the Sun Devils in the second and Denver took four minor penalties to complicate its issues. Guttman managed to help the Pioneers tie the game 1-1 by capping a tic-tac-toe play from Liam Finlay and Hank Crone on a five-on-three power play at 10:35 of the second, but Arizona State's second goal off the rush at 14:15 broke the momentary stalemate.

With Devin Cooley pulled in the final minute of regulation, Guttman received a pass from Emilio Pettersen in the right faceoff circle and tucked a shot past Debrouwer.

"I liked our response from last night and our challenge is to keep it going and keep learning lessons to be the team we can be," Carle said. "We have to grow and continue mature as a group so we're not on this emotional roller coaster we've been on the last four weeks."

The Pioneers went 1/5 on the power play and 4/4 on the penalty kill…Devin Cooley made 20 saves in his second start of the season…
