Denver Takes Lead on Night Two of Summit League Championships

Cameron Auchinachie breaks 50 free Summit League Championship record

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of Denver men's and women's swimming and diving programs combined to win all 10 swimming events to take a big lead on night two of the 2019 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships at the Midco Aquatic Center.

Cameron Auchinachie (Binghamton, N.Y.) set a Summit League Championship record in Thursday morning's prelims with his 19.40 in the 50 free. Auchinachie later broke that record again in the finals with his 19.26.
 
As a team, Denver recorded 10 NCAA B Standards on the second night of the championships.
 
Denver recorded four NCAA standards in Thursday morning's prelims. Auchinachie picked one up in the 50 free, Colin Gilbert (Kamloops, B.C.) added another in the 500 free, while Josie Valette (Boulder, Colo.) and Kylie Cronin (Marblehead, Mass.) both earned NCAA B Standards in the 100 fly.
 
Auchinachie turned in the first finals NCAA B Standard of the night with his 19.54 in the leadoff leg of the 200 free relay. Annelyse Tullier (Dallas, Texas) earned an NCAA B Standard in the women's 500 free, while Gilbert earned his second of the day in the men's 500 free. Valette recorded her NCAA B Standard in the 100 fly finals, while Auchinachie and Jackson Gainer (San Jose, Calif.) both picked up standards in the 50 free.

Alex Morgan (Dyer, Ind.) opened night two for the Pioneers with a third place finish in the men's 1-meter dive.
 
The Pioneers opened the swimming portion of Thursday's finals with a victory in the 200 free relay. Thursday's quartet of Aysia Leckie (Georgetown, Ontario), Lauren Moden (Parker, Colo.), Sarah Lingen (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Heidi Bradley (Victoria, B.C.) combined for a 1:30.90 to take the race by just shy of three seconds. The relay win was the sixth for the Pioneers in the event this season.
 
Denver's men followed that up with a 1:18.96 in their race swam by Auchinachie, Adriel Sanes (Rosharon, Texas), Gainer and Robin Kuebler (Centennial, Colo.). The Pioneers earned their fourth win in the event this season.
 
In the first individual event of the night, Denver's women claimed four of the top five spots, including sweeping the podium in the women's 500 free. Tullier won the race with a 4:46.35, followed by a second place finish from Angie Lindsay (Beaverton, Ore.) who clocked in at 4:54.60 and Andi Johnston's (Fort Collins, Colo.) 4:57.51 for third. Izzy Smith (Leawood, Kan.) was the fourth Pioneer in the A-Final, taking fifth with a 5:00.86. Tullier's 500 free victory was her second of the campaign.
 
Gilbert's sixth 500 free victory of the season led the Denver men in the event with his 4:16.94. Denver's men also swept the podium with Jesse Haraden (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) taking second in 4:29.02 and Gavin McGee (San Jose, Calif.) grabbing third with a 4:29.41. Nathan Rock (Boulder, Colo.) reached the wall in fifth with a 4:35.01.
 
Denver's women swept the top four spots in the women's 100 fly on Thursday night. Valette's second win in the event this year saw her finish with a 52.01, putting her in the top-15 nationally based on times entering the weekend. Cronin took second in 53.50, McKayla Sanchez (Temecula, Calif.) clocked in at 54.37 to take third and Sarah Lingen (Maple Grove, Minn.) finished fourth with a 55.40.
 
The Pioneer men once again matched the women's performance in the event. Sanes won his third 100 fly of the season in 47.70, Graham Walker (Nairobi, Kenya) took second with a 48.18, Peter Webster (Odense, Denmark) finished third with a 48.51 and Cy Jager (Moscow, Idaho) took fourth with his 48.70.
 
In the women's 200 IM, Denver swept the top five spots. Emily Vandenberg (Ajax, Ontario) picked up her second win in the event this year with a 2:02.94. Charlotte Simon (Saint Remy, France) took second after her 2:03.50, Brandi Vu (Longmont, Colo.) clocked in at 2:03.62 to grab third, Ally Yancy (Cave Creek, Ariz.) reached the wall in fourth with her 2:03.80 and Uma Knaven (Chapel Hill, N.C.) wrapped up the Pioneer top-five with a 2:03.88.
 
On the men's side, Denver took the top six spots in the event. Neil Wachtler (Waco, Texas) earned his first event win in the 200 IM this season, reaching the wall in 1:47.17. David Mihalic (Ljubljana, Slovenia) took second in 1:48.71, Kyle Ewoldt (Gilbert, Ariz.) reached the wall third in 1:50.15, Blayze Jessen (Denver, Colo.) finished fourth in 1:50.16, Anthony Nosack (Beaverton, Ore.) clocked in at 1:50.73 to take fifth and Trent Panzera (Gauteng, South Africa) finished sixth with a 1:51.68.
 
Denver's women then took four of the top five spots in the women's 50 free. Moden's sixth win in the event this year was earned with her 22.89. Bradley took third with a 23.29, Leckie grabbed fourth in 23.36 and Lingen finished fifth with a 23.39.
 
The Pioneer men swept the podium in the 50 free, led by Auchinachie's fifth win in the event this season after his Summit League record 19.26. Gainer reached the wall second in 19.92, Hugo Sykes (Weston, Conn.) finished third with a 20.31 and Kuebler grabbed fifth with his 20.62. Finn Kennard-Campbell (Hamilton, New Zealand) wrapped up the Pioneers appearances in the 50 free A-Final with his 20.74 to take eighth.
