Pioneers Victorious in Season Opener

STANFORD – The University of Denver women's lacrosse team defeated Stanford 8-7 in a rainy season opener on Friday night. The Pioneers held a seven-goal lead at the half, and posted 25 total shots on the night.

"I am really proud of the heart and hustle the team showed today," said head coach Liza Kelly. "It was a physical battle in tough conditions. Stanford made some good halftime adjustments but we buckled down for the win." 
 
Pioneer Performers:
Senior Julia Feiss notched her first goal of the season with 20:55 left in the first half, assisted by Kendra Lanuza, who went on to tally two assists, two points and five shots.
 
Eliza Radochonski led the team with four shots on goal, while Hannah Liddy put away three of Denver's eight goals.
 
Quintin Hoch-Bullen and Molly Little also scored a goal apiece for the Crimson and Gold.
 
First-Half Success:
The Pioneers opened the season on a high note, putting away seven goals in the first half and out-shooting Stanford 17-3. Denver also attempted 10 shots on goal compared to the Carinal's two, and tallied 14 ground balls to the Stanford's nine.
 
Seniors Represent:
Seniors Elizabeth Behrins, Kate Fischer, Caroline Lewis, Maddie Baum, Audrey Schreck, Nicki Wilkinson and Kennedy Milburn all saw action in the game. Milburn held down the defense with three caused turnovers and Lewis totaled a team-high four ground balls.
 
Season Openers Against Stanford:
This marks as the third-consecutive season the Pioneers opened competition against the Cardinal, bringing home their third straight win. Denver defeated the Cardinal on the road in 2017, 10-7, and at home in 2018, 12-9.
 
The Crimson and Gold are now 11-18 all-time against Stanford, 5-6 on the road.
 
What's Next:
The Pioneers remain on the road as they travel to Berkeley to face California at 1 p.m. Mt on Sunday, Feb. 10.
