DENVER – The University of Denver women's basketball will wrap up the regular season on Saturday night against Omaha at 7 pm MT. Prior to the game seniors Courtney Smith, Haley Simental and Samantha Romanowski will be recognized for their contributions to the DU program.
Denver is 16-12 overall and 9-6 in the Summit League, guaranteeing its first ever Summit League record over .500. The Pioneers are also just one win away from securing the number three seed at the League tournament next week. Second year head coach Jim Turgeon's team ranks ninth in the nation in scoring, averaging 81.1 points per game while shooting a league-best 39.4 percent (4th in the NCAA) from downtown.
DU features five players who average double-figures in Madison Nelson (15.8 points per game), Lauren Loven (14.8 points per game), Samantha Romanowski (11.9 points per game), Courtney Smith (10.8 points per game) and Claire Gritt (10.6 points per game) who combine for over 75% of Denver's offensive output.
The Pioneers will look to complete the season sweep over Omaha after beating the Mavericks 95-68 in the first game of Summit League play. In the win five players reached double-figures while Smith recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Omaha is just 8-20 overall and 2-13 in the Summit League but the Mavericks are still fighting for a chance to play in the League tournament next week. Omaha rides a two-game losing streak after defeating Purdue Fort Wayne 70-61 back on February 16.
Despite the tough season, the Mavericks have given league opponents some trouble losing two games by just one point and two games by ten points or less. Rayanna Carter leads the Mavericks averaging 9.5 points per game but Claire Killian (8.9 points per game), Mariah Murdie (8.0 points per game) and Elena Pilakouta (8.0 points per game) all provide solid offensive contribution.
It will be a game of contrasting styles as Omaha averages just 59.2 points per game while holding opponents to 65.8 points. Denver will try and repeat the early season performance of 95 points which remains the most points the Mavericks have allowed in league play this season.
