DENVER - The Denver Pioneers men's tennis team (6-7, 1-0) fell to the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks 4-3 in a St. Patrick's Day showdown on Sunday at the Denver Tennis Park.Â
Denver dropped the doubles point in a decisive third match at No. 3. After Mattia Ros/Pedro Fernandez del Valle won 6-3 against Tom Fisher/Chris Steele at No. 2 and Matt Summers/James Davis lost 6-2 against Ruben Montano/Tim Handel at No. 1, Ignatius Castelino/Eric Morris battled Lucas Taylor/Facundo Tumosa before falling 6-4 at No 3.
Northern Arizona added to its lead in singles play, picking up wins at No. 1 and No. 5 before securing the match with a victory in the third set at No. 6. Fernandez del Valle and Summers highlighted Denver's play on the singles courts with Fernandez del Valle logging a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win against Steele at No. 4 and Summers recording a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win against Taylor at No. 2. James Davis brought the Pioneers their third and final team match with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 win against Tumosa at No. 3Â
The Pioneers were originally scheduled to play three matches this weekend, however their matches in Idaho were cancelled due to inclement weather.
Denver is set to return to the court on Saturday, March 30 against Drake and Sunday, March 31 against UC Santa Barbara. Both matches will be held at the Denver Tennis Park.
