DENVER – The University of Denver men's tennis team downed Summit league opponent Drake 4-3 on Saturday morning. The win snaps a two-match losing streak and moves the Pios to 7-7 overall and 2-0 in the league.
Denver opened the match with a strong showing in doubles play, winning the first two matches to clinch the team point.
Daniel Krulig/Eric Morris defeated Tom Hands/Ben Clark 6-2 at No. 3 and
Matt Summers/James Davis knocked off Bayo Phillips/Barny Thorold 6-3 at No. 1 to secure the point. With the team point locked up,
Mattia Ros/Pedro Fernandez Del Valle beat Vinny Gillespie/Calum MacGeoch 6-4 to sweep the doubles competition.
Krulig kicked off singles play with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Thorold at No. 5 and Summers won 6-4, 6-2 over Gillespie at No. 1 to put DU up 3-0 in the match. Drake made things interesting, winning the next three singles matches to tie the match at three. With the match hanging in the balance, Davis beat his opponent Phiilips, 7-6, 6-3 to secure the victory.
Next up: Denver returns to the court tomorrow to host UC Santa Barbara at 12 pm MT at the Denver Tennis Park.
