DENVER – The University of Denver women's basketball team will continue its milestone-packed season on Sunday afternoon in the second round of the WNIT. The Pioneers will face the University of Idaho at 3 PM MT at Memorial Gym in Moscow, Idaho.
DU (18-13, 10-6), which won its first-ever Division I postseason game on Thursday night at New Mexico, will have to tame an opponent that looks eerily similar to itself. Head coach
Jim Turgeon's team relies on a potent offense that averages 80.7 points per game (eighth in the NCAA) while featuring five double-digit scorers.
Madison Nelson (16.4 points and 9.0 rebounds per game), who was named second-team all-league, led the team in scoring and rebounding from the jump. She is joined by teammates
Lauren Loven (14.3 points per game),
Samantha Romanowski (11.9 points per game),
Claire Gritt (10.7 points per game) and
Courtney Smith (10.3 points per game). Those five combine for more than three-quarters of DU's offensive output. Denver is also one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the nation, hitting on 38.9 percent (third in the NCAA) of its long-distance jumpers while making 9.4 3s per game (12th in the NCAA).
Idaho (21-11, 16-4), which defeated Loyola Marymount in the first round of the WNIT, had a solid regular season under 11
th-year head coach Jon Newlee. The Vandals offense, like DU's, is high-paced as Newlee's squad averages 77.6 points per game (20th in the NCAA). Idaho is one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the land, averaging 11.3 3s per game (first in the NCAA) while connecting on 37.5 percent (12th in the NCAA) of its 3-pointers. Senior Mikayla Ferenz leads the team, averaging 22.1 points per game (10th in the NCAA) while adding 5.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. Fellow senior Taylor Pierce averages 19.1 points per contest. Pierce (39.2 percent) and Ferenz (35.3 percent) lead the offense, but the Vandals have two players, Gina Marxen (40.5 percent) and Juliet Jones (40.6 percent), who are serious threats from beyond the arc.
Sunday's game could come down to defensive effectiveness, something both teams have struggled with all season. The Vandals allow 73.2 points per game (329th in the NCAA) as opponents are shooting 43.0 percent (303rd in the NCAA) while DU's opponents score 76.1 points per game (342nd in the NCAA).
