DENVER – The [9/9] University of Denver men's lacrosse team got multi-goal games from five different players, while the defense, led by 12 saves from senior goalie
Alex Ready (Lancaster, Pa.), held [19/RV] Georgetown to single digits in a 16-9 win on Saturday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
Denver's victory was the 400
th in the Hall of Fame career of head coach
Bill Tierney, who became the second coach in NCAA Division I history to reach the milestone, doing so 62 games faster than long-time friend and competitor John Danowski (
READ: Tierney's Path to 400 Wins).
Senior
Colton Jackson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), who was named one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award on Friday, became the 18
th Pioneer in the program's Division I history to reach 100 career points. Jackson reached the milestone in his 59
th career game, putting him 17
th on the list of fastest Pioneers to do it. The Denver captain is just the eighth DI Pioneer midfielder to reach the century mark, and the seventh fastest. Jackson also joins active teammates
Ethan Walker (Peterborough, Ontario) and
Austin French (Danville, Calif.) on the list, who reached the milestone in 23 and 44 games, respectively.
Freshman
Brett Boos (Parker, Colo.) went 17-of-26 from the faceoff dot with seven ground balls and fed his first two career assists, both in the first half.
French led Denver's offensive output with six points on four goals and two assists in his first game of the campaign at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The hat trick for French was the 11
th of his career and his second this season. Walker added five points on three goals and two helpers, earning career hat trick number 22 and his fourth in 2019. Jackson completed the hat trick trio for the Pioneers with three and an assist. Saturday marked the 21
st time since the start of the 2014 season that the Pioneers have had three players score a hat trick in the same game (fourth time against Georgetown).
Sophomore
Jack Hannah (Milford, Ohio) matched Jackson's point output with four, netting two and distributing two more. Classmate
Ted Sullivan (Tucson, Ariz.) also finished with a pair of goals. Denver has now had at least five different players finish with multi-goal games in a single game 15 times since the start of the 2014 season. Freshman
Johnny Marrocco (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored in his second-straight appearance with two points on a goal and an assist.
Junior
Danny Logan (Upper Arlington, Ohio) led the Denver defense with eight ground balls, while senior
Brett Greenlee (Newport Beach, Calif.) caused multiple turnovers for the second time in his career.
Jackson wasted no time getting his 100
th career point, netting his first of two first half goals from distance with 7:09 to go in the first quarter, part of a four-goal answer to Georgetown's opening goal to make it 4-1 with 6:30 remaining. French scored the first two Denver goals 37 seconds apart and Sullivan capped off the run with his 10
th of the season.
Walker's 19
th of the year fell in-between a pair of Georgetown goals to send the score to 5-3 through 15 minutes.
Georgetown got on the board first to start the second, but Denver ended the half on a 5-1 run to take a 10-5 lead into the locker room. Walker scored two goals in the run to complete his 22
nd career hat trick, including his fourth of the campaign. French also completed a hat trick, his 11
th of his Pioneer career, while Jackson and freshman
Ellis Geis (Tustin, Calif.) also scored in the run to complete the first half scoring.
Denver scored more goals in the first half (10) than it did in the two games against Georgetown combined last year (9). The Pioneers turned it over just one time in the first 30 minutes, finishing in single-digits in that category for the first time this season. DU's ride was effective in the first half, forcing the eighth-ranked team in the country entering the weekend into four failed clears on six attempts in the first quarter.
After killing off a man-up chance for Georgetown in the early stages of the third quarter, Jackson's hat-trick goal made it 11-5 and Hannah's first of the day pushed the DU lead to seven. Georgetown's Jake Carraway found the back of the net for the 29
th time this season with 8:05 to go in the third to close out the scoring at 12-6 heading into the final 15 minutes.
Sullivan's 11
th of 2019 from Marrocco pushed Denver's lead back to seven, but after the Hoyas got it back to within six, Denver extended the lead to nine with a three-goal run in 1:28 to make it 16-7 with 5:38 to play. Georgetown scored twice in the final 2:23 in the closing stages of Tierney's 400
th win.
