DU Holds Ground on Moving Day at ASU Ping Invitational

Weinstein sits in 10th after 36 holes

PHOENIX – The University of Denver golf held its ground on day two of the ASU Ping Invitational on Saturday. The Pioneers fired a team score of 299, 11-over-par.

The Crimson and Gold still sit 10th with a two-day total of 20-over (596), just five shots back of No. 5 UCLA and No. 24 Furman.

The 54-hole event is being hosted by Arizona State at the Papago Golf Course in Phoenix.

Par for the 6,430-yard course was 72.

Head coach Lindsay Kuhle went with the lineup of Sophie Newlove, Mary Weinstein, Camille Enright, Trussy Li and Alyson Bean.

Anni Heck also competed, but as an individual.

No. 7 Stanford leads all teams in the 14-team field at 5-under through Saturday, one stroke ahead of the 16th-ranked Sun Devils.

The elite field features 10 teams ranked in the top 34 in the most recent Golfstat rankings.

The Cardinal's Andrea Lee, ranked as the top golfer in the country, leads the field at 5-under through day one, one stroke ahead of Oklahoma's Kaitlin Milligan.

"We continue to hit the ball really well but need to work on our lag putting and distance control to play better tomorrow," Kuhle said. "We've been outstanding on par 5s and par 3s this week. Unfortunately, we didn't finish great with the counting scores shooting 8-over in the final five holes.

"We will continue to compete and have great course management tomorrow and see how low we can take it."

Weinstein once again was a bright spot for DU, firing a second-round 72 (even par) on the afternoon to finish up tied for 10th going into the final round on Sunday. The junior did rack up five birdies on the round.

"Mary was solid today for us once again a 72," Kuhle said. "She has been really consistent and confident at even par the last three rounds this week. Her putting and long game looks the best it's looked and she's put a lot of hard work in. There were some difficult hole locations today but the weather couldn't have been more perfect."

Newlove and Bean are tied for 46th at 6-over through two rounds. Bean moved up five spots on moving day, posting a 2-over 74 for the round, a two-stroke improvement on her opening-round 76 yesterday.

Enright wrapped up Saturday tied for 58th with a day-two 5-over performance on the course.

Li dropped on spot into a tie for 73rd.

Heck, competing as an individual, finished 82nd.

Round three is set for Sunday.
